About Us:
Hoskins A. Shadow established Tennessee Valley Nursery in 1941. Prior to then he worked for Jones Ornamental Nursery in Nashville as landscape foreman. His father was Joe Shadow who had a nursery in Winchester growing bareroot fruit trees. When Hoskins told his fellow workers at Nashville that he had bought 40 acres in Franklin County and was going to start a nursery there, they said "Hoskins, you can't make a living on 40 acres". He replied," Then I'll sell 20 acres". With 40 acres and a mule, Hoskins grew a general line of nursery stock with an increasing emphasis on bareroot fruit trees. In the mid-1940's he started budding dogwood trees. He developed a more efficient production system for dogwood production, which we still use today. Because of his success in efficiently producing quality budded dogwoods, Winchester became the Dogwood Capital of America. Many other growers began to grow budded dogwoods the way 'Mr. Hoskins' taught them.
