Assessing the State of the Art and Science of Buddleja Breeding with a Focus on Sterility and Regulation
Sunday, July 16 • 9:30 AM - 10:20 AM

Buddleja davidii is prized by gardeners for their long flowering season, variety of colors, and pollinator attraction. Unfortunately, the species has escaped cultivation including in Oregon where it has degraded riparian habitat. Breeders have addressed its weediness by developing cultivars using hybridization and polyploidization, some of which have been introduced as seedless or nearly so. Oregon has approved more than a dozen of these cultivars, some based on “sterility” and some due to their hybrid nature. However, methods to evaluate fertility of cultivars are not standardized, something researchers across the country are currently proposing. Dr. Contreras will discuss HRI-funded research conducted to evaluate a large suite of cultivars and the implications on future breeding efforts. Additionally, he will discuss what these findings mean for future regulation of other banned taxa in Oregon and beyond.

Ryan Contreras, Professor and Associate Head at Oregon State University, Department of Horticulture
Ryan is a Professor and Associate Head of Horticulture at Oregon State University, where he has a teaching and research appointment that focuses on woody landscape plants. He teaches core plant propagation, plant growth and development, and two terms of landscape plant identification. More recently, he has developed Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) courses in woody plant identification to help train folks entering the nursery industry without a horticulture background. He established the Ornamental Plant Breeding Program, which develops new cultivars of woody shrubs and trees to improve traits such as disease resistance, habit, fragrance, reduced fertility, and much more. He has developed a diverse program including breeding efforts in nearly 50 genera – a number that continues to grow. The overarching goal is for the research to directly support and enhance the success of nursery producers, landscapers, and consumers while expanding the scientific body of knowledge.
