CEA Lighting: What Metrics Matter and How to Find Them
Saturday, July 15 • 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Horticultural lighting advances have increased opportunities for lighting fixtures that are tailored to specific needs. In this session, a high-level overview of the common metrics used to quantify the performance of horticultural lighting will be provided. We will also discuss using the DesignLights Consortium’s Horticultural Lighting Qualified Product List (DLC Hort QPL), a public database of over a thousand horticultural lighting fixtures that have been evaluated against a set of objective performance standards – which is required for many energy efficiency rebates and some energy codes. Using the QPL, we’ll examine how these fixtures are performing based on these metrics and then demonstrate how to find and compare products. Lastly, we’ll go through how to use the QPL to select products that meet your specific needs.

Kasey Holland, Horticultural Technical Manager at DesignLights
Kasey Holland leads all strategic planning and direction and development of Horticultural Lighting technical requirements as Technical Manager for the DLC’s Horticultural Lighting Program. After working as a graduate student research assistant at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s (RPI) Lighting Research Center, Kasey’s desire to work for a mission-driven organization and interest in product development led him to join the DLC where he also helps to inform quality of light topics for the DLC’s Solid-State Lighting Program focusing primarily on spectral quality considerations. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics from Stephen F. Austin State University and earned a Master’s in Lighting at RPI and is a member of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers’ ES-310 Ag Lighting Group and the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Horticulture Lighting Committee and Color Committee. Although immersed in technical policymaking at the DLC, Kasey loves working with his hands, cooking BBQ, and playing video games.

DesignLights Consortium -- Lighting for a better future.
The DLC is a non-profit organization improving energy efficiency, lighting quality, and the human experience in the built environment. We collaborate with utilities, energy efficiency programs, manufacturers, lighting designers, building owners, and government entities to create rigorous criteria for lighting performance that keeps up with the pace of technology. Together, we’re creating solutions for a better future with better lighting.

    Energy. Quality. Controllability.
Lighting evolves. The DLC works to establish LED lighting and controls as the gateway to connected infrastructure, meaning smart buildings and smart cities that can lead the way to net zero carbon emissions.
