On-the-Job Training
Sunday, July 16 • 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Most training in the horticulture field is completed on-the-job. Too often, that translates to a trial-by-fire, which results in a lack of training, or employees feeling of micromanaged. If done effectively, on-the-job training can be a powerful tool to engage your team, build trust, and bond with them as they learn your methods and processes. Learn how to tap into the best approaches for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners to maximize their retention and shorten their time to proficiency. High-impact training reduces errors, mitigates safety issues, bridges quality gaps, and reduces time-to-proficiency, so your workforce is ready to go faster and more efficiently. A simple, five step process of Tell, Show, Do, Review, Teach You will be taught. Key takeaways include: training techniques, learning styles, learning retention, training and development skills.

Generations in the Workplace
Tuesday, July 18 • 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM

This session is more focused on the human side of horticulture, and the challenges of keeping employees engaged and committed to their employer. One of the key elements is to understand the shifting attitudes toward work and employment over time. This is an interactive and reflective session discussing the four generations in the workforce today, and how their views and attitudes toward the workplace are formed. The discussion focuses on understanding, communicating, and working most effectively with generations other than your own. The key takeaways: generational awareness, generational identity traits vs. stereotypes, appreciating and motivating a multi-generational workforce, and attracting and retaining talent from younger generations.

Metrolina Greenhouses -- The largest single-site, heated greenhouse (over 150 acres) in the US
Metrolina Greenhouses is a family-owned, wholesale plant and se?rv?ices company that started business in April 1972. We are the largest single-site heated greenhouse in the United States at 162 acres under roof. If you are familiar with the Charlotte region you could note that our size is comparable to 5 Concord Mills Malls which could fit inside the greenhouse! In addition we have approximately 15 acres of outdoor growing space and are still expanding. We also have a second location in York S.C. that has 175 acres of outdoor growing space.

Metrolina Greenhouses is one of the most automated greenhouses in the United States and has many internally designed machines from automatic plant transplanters to mechanical shipping belts. We employ 725 people year round, and 600 additional people in the spring and fall peaks. We ship to Big Box Retailers, Mass Merchandisers, Home Improvement Chains and other greenhouses along the East Coast. Our product typically stays within a 500 mile radius of the greenhouse, but that puts us in most states on the East Coast. During our peak season (March-June) we ship over 180 trailer loads of product a day!
