CEA Lighting: What Metrics Matter and How to Find Them
Saturday, July 15 • 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM

Horticultural lighting advances have increased opportunities for lighting fixtures that are tailored to specific needs. In this session, a high-level overview of the common metrics used to quantify the performance of horticultural lighting will be provided. We will also discuss using the DesignLights Consortium’s Horticultural Lighting Qualified Product List (DLC Hort QPL), a public database of over a thousand horticultural lighting fixtures that have been evaluated against a set of objective performance standards – which is required for many energy efficiency rebates and some energy codes. Using the QPL, we’ll examine how these fixtures are performing based on these metrics and then demonstrate how to find and compare products. Lastly, we’ll go through how to use the QPL to select products that meet your specific needs.

Aaron Feldman, Senior Technical Operations Analyst at DesignLights Consortium
Aaron Feldman, Senior Technical Operations Analyst for the DLC, Designlights Consortium, provides research, analysis, and program support for various programs and initiatives, driven by his interest in advancing energy efficiency and quality in the lighting industry. Responsible for the operations of the DLC's Horticulture Lighting Program, Aaron assist manufacturers and labs through the application process, helps inform and improve DLC policy and technical development, and transform policy into an application process. Prior to joining the DLC in 2019, Aaron worked in the lighting industry for seven years as a design engineer for automotive exterior lighting and commercial lighting, also in certification, coordinating with design engineers to develop and execute test programs to obtain product certifications. He received his Lighting Certification from the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions and is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s (IES) Testing Procedures Committee. Aaron earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University.

DesignLights Consortium -- Lighting for a better future.
The DLC is a non-profit organization improving energy efficiency, lighting quality, and the human experience in the built environment. We collaborate with utilities, energy efficiency programs, manufacturers, lighting designers, building owners, and government entities to create rigorous criteria for lighting performance that keeps up with the pace of technology. Together, we’re creating solutions for a better future with better lighting.

    Energy. Quality. Controllability.
Lighting evolves. The DLC works to establish LED lighting and controls as the gateway to connected infrastructure, meaning smart buildings and smart cities that can lead the way to net zero carbon emissions.
