Bio-Fly, a fully owned subsidiary of Bio-Bee, was founded for the purpose of developing and supplying biological control solutions for the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) and other pests, using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), an environmentally friendly, non-chemical pest control method.
Bio-Fly’s activities are an additional component of Bio-Bee’s vision of advancing and implementing means and measures that are non-chemical in the control of key pests to modern agriculture. Bio-Bee and Bio-Fly thus are active participants in the worldwide trend for reducing the use of chemical pesticides in agriculture.
Bio-Fly’s Products and Services
Bio-Fly has a mass rearing facility for the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly), a major pest world-wide. The company supplies sterilized male pupae, as well as sterile male flies ready for dispersal in agricultural fields.
In addition to these products, Bio-Fly provides professional consultancy and comprehensive support services for Medfly control projects, including project definition, planning and implementation in the field.
Proven Professional Capabilities
Bio-Fly is a dynamic company that has grown rapidly since its establishment in 2004, and has proved its flexibility, initiative and ability to respond swiftly to market requirements. The company’s production facility, established in 2005 with the support from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and designed to produce about 15 million pupae a week, can now produce five times this amount of pupae, and even more.
National and Regional Collaborations
Bio-Fly is the only company engaged in mass production of sterile flies in the eastern Mediterranean region, a region that suffers greatly from the damage inflicted by the Medfly.
The sterile fly is a public product that is integrated into the national and regional Medfly control activities. Among our customers and partners are government ministries and agricultural organizations in Israel and abroad, who have taken up the challenge of controlling the Medfly in an environmentally friendly manner, and have found in Bio-Fly a loyal partner for this vision.
Company products are currently used in a joint Israeli-Jordanian project in the Arava-Araba Valley, and in the future will be distributed to countries in the Mediterranean Basin and to neighboring Arab countries, and will serve as a bridge for regional cooperation.
Research & Development
Bio-Fly maintains close contact and relations with the finest researchers engaged in the study of the Mediterranean fruit fly both in Israel and abroad. In addition, the company is expanding its activities to include control of additional pests using the SIT method.
Our R&D center continuously improves production processes and quality assurance procedures in order to supply products and services of the highest quality.
